## Division Strategies and Rules

When learning how to divide we use the same approach as multiplication. We start with concrete examples for a few days/weeks depending on time, then move onto pictorial, and then finally number sentence representation. The main strategy that we use when dividing is 'think multiplication'.

We would start out first by using concrete examples. This is when we are using manipulatives. An example question would be, "Could you show me 16, and break it up into 2 groups...How many are in each group?

The next step would be translating that into pictorial examples using a dry erase board or pencil and paper.

The final step would be writing a number sentences. 16/2=8

'Think Multiplication' 16/2=? What times 2 gives me 16?

Factor Divisibility Rules:

2 - A number is divisible by 2, if the last digit of the number is even (ends in 0, 2, 4, 6, 8).

5 - A number is divisible by 5, if the last digit of the number is 0 or 5.

10 - A number is divisible by 10, if the last digit of the number is 0.

3 - A number is divisible by 3, if the sum of the digits of the number is divisible by 3.

6 - A number is divisible by 6, if the number is divisible by both 2 and 3.

9 - A number is divisible by 9, if the sum of the digits of the number is divisible by 9.

4 - A number is divisible by 4, if the number formed by the last two digits of the number is divisible by 4.
